12 for Fall 2012-My Must-Have List

It’s that time of year again! The first day of fall is tomorrow, which means gorgeous fall colors, warm knits, and boots. Back to school vibes always inspire shopping, even though it has been quite a while since I last had a first day of school! In celebration, I decided to put together a list of my 12 for 2012 fall collection.

1. Colored and printed skinnies

The bright denim of spring and summer has transitioned into darker colors. Jewel tones, mustard, grey, there are so many great options here. Maroon (also a huge color trend) and purple are definitely my favorites, and I picked up a pair of these Mossimo Skinny Premium Denim skinnies that I found at target in both two colors. At under $30/pair, no reason not to get both!

MossimoPurpleJeggingsrc: target.com

You can also try skinny cords, a great option for fall. I just picked these AG stretch corduroy skinnies up in grey.

AGCordSkinniessrc: nordstrom.com

Just like colored, printed denim is still going strong. I found these adorable snakeskin skinnies at Target. The perfect way to try out the trend without a big investment. More options with brocade (two trends in one!) here and floral skinnies here and here.

2. Boots

Bootssrc: hautefavesdeux.tumblr.com

I have a love-hate relationship with boots. I absolutely adore them, but due to my “athletic” calves (they’re 16″), I’ve always struggled to find a pair that will fit. I’ve finally been able to slowly build up a great collection, but it is always incredible frustrating when I see cute boots that I’ll never be able to wear.

This season I finally decided to invest in the Stuart Weitzman ’50 50′ boot. Because of the stretchy back panels, they mold perfectly over my calves, and the leather feels like butter.

I also picked up my first Frye boots this season. I was so excited to find out that they make the Veronica slouch in the wide calf version (here is the regular). Incredibly comfortable, fits my calves, and is perfect with both skirts and with jeans/leggings.

3. Scarves

Kendieveryday(src: kendieeveryday.com)

I adore scarves (in Seattle I even wear them year-round), and just like boots, they just feel like fall. I have quite a substantial collection, but when I see a fabulous scarf it’s just hard to resist making an addition. Simple bright colors like this Love Quotes one from Shopbop (I ended up getting a darker pink color which is no longer available) helps bring sunshine into dreary gray fall days.

LoveQuotesScarfsrc: shopbop.com

A fun, printed scarf is the perfect touch for a simple outfit of jeans and a white tee. I love this map of the world scarf from Nordstrom that I just picked up.

Captureworldscarfsrc: nordstrom.com

4. Cardigans and blazers

Cardigans and blazers are perfect fall layering pieces. Inspired by Amy, I picked up a mustard version of my favorite Target cardigan.

For blazers, go for a classic knit like this cute black one from Target, or play more with patterns with this floral blazer from Nordstrom BP. Nordstrom BP is definitely one of my favorite places to shop for blazers, they’re reasonable priced and so cute!

5. Patterned tights

Just like patterned pants, patterned and colored tights are still right on trend. You can go crazy with patterns or colors, or do a slightly more muted version like these

or these

6. Military-inspired pieces

Once again, military-inspired style is a big fall trend. One of my girlfriends just introduced me to need supply.com, and I found this fabulous Lorimer jacket.

I also adore this Topshop camo jacket from Nordstrom. The faux fur lining is removable, so it will be a perfect transition piece.

7. Leather

Leather on the fall 2012 runwaysrc: collegefashion.net

Leather is absolutely huge this fall. Luckily there are tons of options (both real and faux) in tops, skirts, and leggings. Pencil skirts in leather or with leather panels/accents. If you don’t want to splurge for the “real deal,” leather accents or faux leather are perfect substitutes. I love my new skirt (unfortunately unavailable), but there are similar options here and here.

Or, you can try leather leggings, like these or these. The proper styling with leather pieces is key, but they can easily be toned down (especially for non-conservative offices).

8. Lace

Lacetrend11src: lacherimarie.wordpress.com

Gotta love lace. Lace is definitely a classic, and yet it is more on trend than ever this fall. It pairs perfectly with your military inspired pieces or leather tops or bottoms.

I paired this Sanctuary skirt with my boots and a tank here, and it is perfect to dress up or down:

This skirt from Target is a fabulous deal (under $8 on sale!)

You can also try a lace top like this (super flattering on!), this, or this.

9. Peplum

I recently started experimenting with peplum. It will stay strong through the fall, and is surprisingly flattering on a variety of body types. Peplum is a short overskirt that’s attached to a jacket, top, skirt, or dress. The great peplum benefit is the defined waist.

Asos is currently my favorite “peplum source,” but there are tons of options out there. I recently picked up this top in black

and this top in cream

10. Menswear-inspired shoes

Smoking slippers, loafers, and moccasins are all fun ways to try out the menswear trend. I’m totally loving menswear-inspired flats with a girlie twist like these pink studded flats

or these snakeskin print moccasins

11. Animal print

Animal print is a classic (just make sure to only wear one piece per outfit), and leopard is definitely my animal of choice. I love my leopard print heels, flats, and scarf (similar here, here, and here), and this season I also picked up a leopard print skinny belt (similar here).

12. A fabulous tote

I love a great tote. They’re the perfect bag for fall (back to school!) especially in a rich jewel tone. I love my new Steven by Steven Madden purple tote

With fall rainy weather, a stylish nylon tote can be the perfect option for commuting. I’m also obsessed with my new Lulu om tote, which works just as well for taking to work and going to the gym or a yoga class.

Nordstrom Anniversary Presale!

July marks one of my favorite sales, the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. It’s infamous in the shopping world, and features fall fashions on sale before the season starts. The official sale starts on July 20th (ends August 5th), but presale is available for Nordstrom cardholders.

This year was the first year that shopping was available online for cardholders before the start of the sale, but I decided to do everything in person. I made an appointment with my personal shopper for this afternoon, sent her a list of everything I liked online, and she also pulled some great stuff for me.

My splurge of the sale was a fabulous black leather jacket. I had selected this jacket online to try on:

It was nice in person, but nothing special. Leslie pulled this incredible Veda leather jacket for me:

I’ve always wanted a leather jacket, and this is truly one of those fabulous pieces that I’ll be able to wear again and again. She paired the jacket with a lace top and a houndstooth scarf.

houndstoothscarf  chloelacetank

Next up, blazers and sweaters. I love a great blazer (I may or may not have an obsession), and this Frenchi blazer was a perfect addition to my blazer collection. The purple is a brownish purple in person, and will be perfect to pair with jeans for work.

Halogen is the Nordstrom house brand, and they make some fabulous items. I picked up this “girlfriend” cardigan in purple nectar, which is more of an aubergine. The fit is fabulous, I may even pick up another color or two. Leslie picked up this sweater for me to try on leggings with, and I ended up loving it. It’s the perfect tunic, super comfortable, but fitted enough to not look bulky.

girlfriendcardigan  trouveseamedsweater

I hadn’t picked out any jeans to try on, but ended up finding two perfect pairs! I tried on the Hue leggings and didn’t love them, but Leslie pulled these Citizen jeggings. They hold everything in, and work as a perfect black skinny jean but also as leggings with a tunic and boots. She also grabbed these Joe’s skinny ankle jeans. They’re the perfect skinny jean length for my short self!

citizensblackskinnyjeans  joesskinnyanklejeans

Finally, I needed a replacement skirt for my pink J Crew skirt which sadly ripped. I’d been eyeing the Halogen seamed pencil skirt for awhile. Leslie recommended the petite length, which was the ideal length. It fit like a glove, and hit just above the knee. Even though it’s not hot pink, it’s the perfect color for a transition into fall.

The “essentials” also go on sale, so I grabbed 4 pairs of hanky panky’s (2 nude, 2 black) and my favorite Betsey Johnson bra and underwear set in blue and black.

Finally, shoes and accessories. I tried on a few pairs of heels and boots, but ended up sticking with my tried and true love of Cole Haan. I’ve been looking for a pair of leather driving moccasins for some time, and I loved the print and stitching on these Cole Haan Air Sadies. Note, I did size down one size from my regular size in Cole Haans. Next were a pair of Air Monica wedges. They’re the perfect shoe for work. Low enough of a wedge that they’re easy to walk in, extremely comfortable, and I love the two-tone color scheme.

colehaandrivingmoccasin  colehaanairmonica

I eventually want to get a pair of diamond or moissanite studs, but these cubic zirconia studs are the perfect substitute. I was eyeing this leather studded bracelet online, but unfortunately they were sold out in store so I’ll be getting it mailed to me.

cubiczirconiaearrings  slicedleatherbracelet

There were a few pieces that I loved that didn’t make the cut. This boucle biker jacket came in both pink and grey, and was adorable on.

pinkbouclejacket  greybouclejacket

These Vince Camuto wide leg pants were very flattering, and would look perfect with sky-high heels. They paired perfectly with this polka dot blouse.

vincecamutowidelegpants  vincecamutopolkadotpeasantblouse

This French Connection sheath dress fit like a glove, and could easily be dressed up or down. And these Pedro Garcia booties were incredible. I’m still tempted to pick them up in either black or raisin (I tried on the black).

frenchconnectionpeplumsheath  pedrogarciabootie

I almost grabbed the Halogen pencil skirt in two additional colors, bright blue and grey/black colorblock.

bluepencilskirt  colorblockpencilskirt

This tweed jacket was quite lightweight, and paired really well with these AG slim boot jeans.

This bow pocket cardigan was ridiculously cute. I love the grey and the black, would be perfect paired with jeans or with pencil skirts.

Weekend Wear, Weekend Purchases, and my Husband’s Shirt

On Saturday, I participated in the Take Steps – Be Heard walk for Crohn’s and Colitis, on my good friend Rachel’s team. It was pretty low key, but definitely for a good cause. Since I was also cleaning for most of the day, I wore my Lulu Wunder Under crops and Scuba print hoodie (similar).

Then on Saturday night we had a great dinner party with friends.

Two of my Sunday outfits revolved around a 50’s themed murder mystery party thrown by Rachel. I was playing the part of a 50s teenager, so I wore Oxford flats, cuffed jeans, a white button down, a yellow cardigan tied around my shoulders, and then wore my hair up in a pony-tail with a scarf tied around it.

In the morning we went shopping and to the Louis Vuitton store to see if they could repair the zipper on my wallet. I was incredibly impressed with their customer service. They repaired the wallet for free, and it took them under an hour! I wore my cuffed jeans, my white splendid tee with button rolled sleeves, black flats, and the scarf tied around my head.

At Nordies, I picked up my “waist under 28 inches” reward! I give myself “rewards” in 3 different categories, pounds lost, inches lost around my waist, and number of workouts. It is also a great way to keep my shopping in check! I got a pair of tan Minnetonka moccasins (I have grey ones, but they are too big! I ended up sizing down a full size.) and a new black Diesel watch.

minnetonkasuedemoccasin  blackdieselwatch

I don’t actually own a white button down, so I decided to steal one of Nick’s. It actually fit well (with the sleeves rolled up) and looked cute! I may have to raid his closet more often….After the party I kept on the shirt, and wore my new moccasins and new watch!

A Cropped Cotton Blazer

We had a photo shoot at work for corporate headshots last Thursday, so I decided to get some new make-up and a new blazer. I didn’t get a chance to take pictures the day of the shoot, so here’s Friday’s outfit instead. I paired my new blazer with a white tee, statement necklace, my Banana Republic grey cropped pants, and black heels.

IMG_4398  IMG_4407

I love cotton blazers for summer, because they help with indoor air-conditioning, but the lightweight fabric pairs much better with overall warmer temperatures. I also think that Nordstrom BP is starting to be my go-to point for great quality affordable blazers!

IMG_4400  IMG_4399

The blazer fit has women’s sizing, I went with the medium (which is size 2-4), and it fits perfectly.

Warmer weather is (slowly) coming to Seattle, and there are some great sales right now. I picked up two pairs of these sateen cropped pants from Banana Republic in tan and grey, for 30% off, and then an additional 30% off the sale price.

greycroppedpants  tancroppedpants

Since we went golfing after work on Friday, pairing the grey pair with a simple white top was perfect. I was able to wear leopard flats and a statement necklace to work, and then take off the necklace and put on my golf shoes for golfing.

April Clothing Purchases

With springtime in full force, I realized that my wardrobe is quite lacking for spring and summer clothes. I tried on this Trouve sleeveless draped deck top when I was at my personal shopping appointment at Nordstrom, and loved it, but not at full price. When I was at the store with Nick the other day and saw that it was on sale, I decided to pick it up!

I also hit J Crew this weekend for a few summertime essentials. J Crew is always hit or miss for me, but this weekend was definitely a hit. I realized that I don’t have any shorts or ankle pants (that aren’t denim) that fit at the moment, so I grabbed two pairs of the 3” chino short in khaki and dark grey, and the Minnie pant in stretch twill in black. The Minnie fits so well that I might need to grab another color or two.

khakishort  stoneshort

blueminniepant  blackminniepant

I also got a few knit tops that can be dressed up or down. I love the length and colors of the Vintage cotton v-neck tee. I got mint green to layer over this Favorite tank in pink as well as the stripped version, Vintage cotton v-neck tee in bold stripe.

minttee  pinktank

Finally, love the color of this great little Skinny leather belt. I’ll have to see how I can style it.

What a Morning!

I always do breakfast with a group of friends on Friday mornings, and while I was climbing into my friend’s jeep, my jeans split open! Completely exposing my behind to the world!

Luckily I was able to borrow his car to drive to the mall nearby. I headed to Nordstrom for the jeans, and since I was there, I decided to grab a new shirt, and some stuff from Lululemon for my trip.

First, I got the Paige ‘Skyline 12’ skinny stretch jeans. They are incredibly comfortable! Can either be worn with jeans, heels, or cuffed up to wear with flats.

paigejeansfront  paigejeansback

Then, I grabbed this shirt (also from Nordstrom), the Splendid mixed media shirt. I got it in grey, but the other colors were super cute, too.

splendidyellow  splendidgrey

Then, on to Lulu!

I’ve been working on planning my packing list for my trip (I’m going to post the details in another post!), and realized that if I could grab a pair of the wunder under leggings that I’d be eyeing, they’d serve dual purpose for comfortable airplane wear as well as workout clothing for the trip itself. I tried them on, and they were amazing! The benefit about being short is that the crops will be perfect under boots (they were the perfect legging length), as well as great for workouts. I also grabbed this scuba hoodie which was on sale (I have a black one already and love it).
